The one area where it's worth asking first is the historic centre round the cathedral and the castle, which is a conservation area. If you're in it, we'll say so.
Don't add to it, and don't point any more water at the house. Carlisle flooded badly in 2005 and again in Storm Desmond in 2015, and a sealed driveway draining onto the road is part of how a street fills up. A permeable surface lets the rain soak through where it lands. We also set the finished level so it falls away from the house rather than towards it, which on an older terrace with a low threshold matters more than the surface itself.

Something with a bit of warmth to it. A lot of Carlisle's older housing is brick and red sandstone, and a stark grey concrete block in front of a Victorian terrace tends to look like it arrived from a new-build estate. Clay pavers, warmer block tones or a resin in a golden blend sit far better with the house. On a short frontage, a border that frames the drive also stops it reading as a car park.
