That is the whole reason we build it the way we do. Deeper sub-base, cross-falls set to move water off quickly, and drainage sized for a storm rather than a rain shower. The failures we get called to look at up this valley are almost always undersized drainage, not the surface.

Yes — around here that is a good share of the work. A track that carries a tractor and a feed lorry is a different build from a car driveway: deeper, coarser, and entirely about how water gets off it. We price it as what it is rather than as a driveway.

The Lake District National Park Authority. Patterdale and Glenridding sit deep in the National Park, where how a property looks from the road and where its water goes both matter to the planners. A dropped kerb onto the A592 or a village road goes to Westmorland and Furness Council instead. We'd always check with you first rather than lay something that turns out to need permission.

Because of what the weather has already done. Storm Desmond in 2015 washed away the old bridge at Pooley Bridge and put Glenridding under water more than once. When becks come off the fells that fast, a driveway built to a town specification simply gets undermined. A deeper, well-drained sub-base and outfalls sized for a storm are the difference between a drive that lasts and one that's gone after one bad winter.

We don't come that way with a loaded wagon. Kirkstone is steep, narrow and one of the first passes in England to close in bad weather, so deliveries come up the A592 along Ullswater from the Penrith side instead. We plan the loads before we quote, so access is already allowed for in the price.
